Classic City Kiwanis has been raising funds to help children in Athens for many years by selling barbeque chicken platters and grilling them in a very special way. In fact, "The Massey Family Recipe" has become famous throughout the Athens area, as it is used by many other non-profit organizations besides CCK (area Boy Scouts especially). Sam Massey, a long time member of CCK (pictured left), has provided untold hours overseeing the slow-cooking process that features his family's secret sauce.

Using custom made, steel mesh racks, 48 chicken halves (fresh from local processors) are carefuly placed side-by-side and laid over the coals. They are turned constantly at set intervals and sprayed liberally with the sauce. After a few hours they are golden brown and delivered piping hot to be combined into platters with slaw, bread, chips and a cookie. Then they are delivered to ticket holders as they drive up to Hawthorne Drugs on Hawthorne Avenue in Athens.

CCK has helped many outstanding groups with this service, including Special Olympics of Athens, The Dugout Club at Clarke Central High, The Samaritan Counceling Center, Athens Little League, Interfaith Hospitality Network, The Navy School and others.
